Many same sex couples do not realize the negative legal implications of living in a state that is opposed to same-sex marriage until it is too late. The best way to provide for yourself and your partner is through a Domestic Partnership Agreement. These agreements are essentially contracts that can cover all aspects of a separation with the exception of child custody. Like couples of the opposite sex, the law does not permit same-sex couples to contract in matters concerning child custody in the event of the dissolution of the relationship.
